World building for make believe: the role of technology in speculative social drama
Getting people to act in a synthetic environment that someone else has set up for them is no small feat. Everybody’s boat seemingly floats on «immersion» nowadays, but the term is not only misleading, but also incredibly narrow when describing the multitude of choices and design decisions that lead to meaningful negotiation of an artistic idea. This talk aims to remind us of seemingly old-school observations and patterns from the social sciences and the practice of directing for theatre, that seem surprisingly contemporary in light of recent technical developments.
